EPIC Programs

Encouraging Positive Intervention in Chapters (EPIC) Programs will include training for chapters on topics of Alcohol and Other Drugs, Hazing Prevention, and Sexual Violence Prevention.

To address three “issue areas” identified in our Community Assessment, the Department created a series of educational programs under the umbrella of EPIC Programs (Encouraging Positive Intervention in Chapters).  The series had a few goals.

  • First, to build the capacity of chapter members to engage with complex topics and take responsibility to address them.
  • Second, to scale the programs to community member engagements while not overtaxing university staff.
  • And third, to engage campus partners as content matter experts, elevate the response to university level where appropriate, and engage evidence based learning methods to help move the needle around the issues identified.

Below is the schedule for the 2025-2026 academic year:

Alcohol and Drug Education

This program is done in partnership with Prevention Services and their Alcohol and Drug Education program. The mission of the Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Education program is to create and sustain a caring community that prepares students to succeed academically, professionally, and personally as well as to become informed, engaged, and productive citizens by reducing the potential unwanted results of substance misuse.

This program includes members completing an online course and attending an in-person training session with Prevention Services.

Prevention Services staff facilitate in-person training for chapter members – typically Fridays afternoons sessions for eight chapters a semester.  A Chapter must have 50% participation to receive full credit on their Standards of Excellence report, however attendance is capped at 50 members.  Larger chapters will have their own workshop, while smaller chapters may be combined.

Active chapter members (including new members) will access the online course through by Prevent.Zone.  Members will have 30 days from enrollment to complete the online course.  Members are welcome to complete any additional course, including Drug Awareness, but need to complete Decisions | Level 2 to help the chapter meet the minimum participation goal.  No less than 75% of members must complete the online course in order to receive full credit in the Standards of Excellence program.

As of October 2025, 966 members have completed the Decisions course, or 78% of those assigned. Workshops are ongoing.

Hazing Prevention

All members, regardless of their EPIC assignment for the year, should complete the  “Fraternity & Sorority Life” online course offered by Prevent.Zone as part of their prevention strategies series.  Each chapter must have 85% of their members complete the program prior to being approved to move forward with intake/recruitment.  All potential members enrolled in formal recruitment, or who attend an interest meeting, will be enrolled.  Any new member added to a new member verification form without having completed the module through a formal process, will be enrolled at that time.  100% of new/aspirant members are expected to complete the training.

For chapters enrolled in HP as part their EPIC Program, in-person training will be offered. The chapter will participate in a number of workshops facilitated by the Fraternity and Sorority Life team.  Workshops are combined across all chapter assigned to HP to enhance dialogue and discourse. Chapters shall have no less than 50% of their members attend workshops each fall.  Sessions are capped at 50 members given capacity and room constraints.

As of October 2025, 3,485 members have completed Hazing Prevention 101 and the Fraternity and Sorority Life Module, or 93% of those enrolled. Workshops are ongoing.

Sexual Violence Prevention

All members participating in this rotation are assigned to the “Upstander Strategies” online course offered by itMatters as part of their prevention strategies series.  This 60 minute online module builds on the university module required for all entering students around Sexual Violence Prevention core curriculum and consent.  The module is sent to all members on August 1 and should be completed within 30 days.  A chapter must achieve 75% completion in order to receive full credit for Standards of Excellence.

Following the online training the chapter will participate in a follow up, in-person training facilitated by the Women’s Center focused on bystander intervention and healthy relationships. Sessions are limited in number to facilitate better engagement.  To that end, either 50% of your chapter OR up to 50 members, whichever is smaller, will participate in the session facilitated by the Women’s Center.

As of October 2025, 735 members have completed the Upstander Strategies course, or 82% of those enrolled. Workshops are ongoing.
